Water volume in the Kazakh part of the Aral Sea increased by 42 percent
The volume of water in the northern part of the Aral Sea has increased significantly. According to the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, the results of the first stage of the project to preserve the Northern Aral Sea have led to an increase in its volume by 42%. Currently, the volume of water in the sea is 27 billion cubic meters. In addition, the salinity of the water has decreased by almost four times, and the annual fishing volume has reached 8 thousand tons.
During 2024, the ministry delivered 2.6 billion cubic meters of water to the Aral Sea, which was achieved as a result of the effective distribution and conservation of Syr Darya water. During the irrigation period, a record 1 billion cubic meters of water was delivered. In 2022, this figure was only 816 million cubic meters.
Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Nurjon Nurzhigitov described these results as the result of systematic work carried out over the past two years. He noted that agreements with neighboring countries on saving and equitable distribution of transboundary water resources have yielded effective results.
The main goal of the Aral Sea Restoration Project is to improve the ecological situation, develop fisheries and tourism, and improve the well-being of the population.
It was also reported in October 2024 that the volume of water in the sea reached 22 billion cubic meters.
