Thailand repatriates people freed from slavery in Myanmar
Thailand repatriated 7,224 foreigners who were rescued from fraudulent call centers on the Myanmar border in February this year. The operation was carried out in cooperation between Thai, Chinese and Myanmar law enforcement agencies.
According to Nikondet Phalangkhun, head of the information department of the Thai Foreign Ministry, a total of 9,951 people have been released, of which more than 5,400 are Chinese citizens.
653 Indonesian citizens and 581 Indian citizens were also repatriated to their families. Those released include citizens of more than 30 countries.
More than 1,700 people are currently staying in Myanmar and will soon be repatriated via Thailand.
According to royal data, more than 500,000 Thais fell victim to internet fraud between 2022 and 2024, with total losses amounting to $1.8 billion.
