Britain suspends trade talks with Israel
The British government has announced that it has temporarily suspended negotiations on a new trade deal with Tel Aviv following the bloodshed in Gaza and Israel's continued military operations.
The UK's Department for International Trade cited the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the humanitarian crisis in the region and the obstacles to the delivery of aid, saying that negotiations on a free trade agreement with Israel would only proceed if peace and international law were respected.
Opposition and human rights groups have been calling for months for London to review military aid, arms exports and economic cooperation with Israel, and British officials have previously said they are reviewing licenses for the export of military equipment to Israel.
Activists and several members of parliament in Britain have hailed the decision as a significant and long-overdue step, arguing that close economic cooperation with Israel is politically and morally unacceptable when human rights are being severely violated in Gaza.
The Israeli government has not yet officially responded to this decision.
