The Russian parliament has adopted a draft law that raises the level of illegal migration to the level of serious crimes and imposes a penalty of up to 15 years in prison for these acts. Also, the period of obtaining a residence permit for foreigners married to a Russian was extended by 3 years.

In the first six months of 2024, Russian courts decided to deport 85,800 migrants, which exceeded all figures in 2022. The amount of fines imposed by the courts on immigrants is also increasing. In the first six months of 2024, foreigners were fined 590 million rubles (more than 6.1 million dollars). This is almost equal to the entire year 2023.

The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that about 630,000 illegal immigrants live in the country. In order for them to leave the country voluntarily, a special register of controlled persons will be introduced in 2025. It is noted that in 2023, the number of labor migrants legally in the Russian Federation did not exceed 3.5 million people. Most of them are citizens of Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.

Against the backdrop of the massive departure of labor migrants from Russia, employers are forced to increase the monthly salaries of migrants. This, in turn, causes an increase in the cost of goods and services and a decrease in their quality - a study by "Moscow Komsomolets".

After the bloody attacks in Moscow, nationalism and chauvinism rose again in Russia. Migrants are being beaten, vandalism and racism have increased.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the country will face a shortage of employees and skills in the coming years. He banned the filling of the looming shortage of workers in the labor market at the expense of low-skilled immigrants. "We need other approaches," said the Russian president.

The Russian Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Population proposes to create a public legal company for targeted, organized recruitment of foreign workers and to improve its mechanism in favor of Russian employers.
