During President Shavkat Mirziyoyev's visit to Hungary, the two countries agreed to establish an expanded strategic partnership. The sides also discussed the adoption of an Investment Cooperation Program, declaring 2026 the Year of Culture of Uzbekistan and Hungary, developing air travel, and other issues.

Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban signed a joint declaration on establishing an expanded strategic partnership in Budapest on Tuesday, the presidential press service reported.

During the official visit, intergovernmental and interdepartmental documents were adopted, including the Extradition Treaty, the Agreement on Cooperation in the Field of Climate Change, interdepartmental agreements on natural disaster management, science and innovation, cooperation in the field of peaceful nuclear energy, and other documents.

During the talks between Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Viktor Orban at the Carmelita Palace, issues of further deepening the Uzbek-Hungarian strategic partnership and multifaceted cooperation were discussed.

It is reported that the current portfolio of joint investment projects amounts to $500 million. Another 1.5 billion euros worth of projects have been prepared for the current visit.

The importance of increasing trade turnover to 500 million euros in the first phase, including through import substitution opportunities and GSP+ status, was noted. To this end, laboratories will be accredited in accordance with EU requirements, a program for pre-certification of goods, and a joint platform for assisting exporting companies will be launched.

Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Viktor Orban also exchanged views on current international and regional issues. The importance of continuing cooperation in combating terrorism, extremism, drug trafficking, human trafficking, and other modern security challenges was emphasized.

The parties agreed to adopt the Investment Cooperation Program at the next meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission to be held in Budapest in July.

It was proposed to continue the activities of the Uzbek-Hungarian Business Council and hold its next meeting in the near future with the broad involvement of business representatives.

Issues of developing direct air routes between the two countries were discussed in order to enhance business, tourism, and cultural ties.

It was proposed to declare next year the Year of Culture of Uzbekistan and Hungary.

In addition, the possibility of introducing a dual diploma system and establishing branches of Hungarian universities in Uzbekistan was considered.

On the same day, President Mirziyoyev also met with Hungarian business circles. Top managers and founders of OTP Bank, BDPST Group, 4iG, Indotek, MVM, Duna Group, MOL Group, H2O Consortium, Inpark, Wizz Air and many other companies participated.

Agreements were reached in the implementation of new projects, including the modernization of transport infrastructure, the construction of roads and logistics centers, the development of utility networks, the production of finished textile products, construction materials, chemical products, pharmaceutical products, digital technologies, and aquaculture.

To accommodate such production facilities, a special industrial zone for European companies is being created in Uzbekistan under the management of the Hungarian operator Inpark.
