The number of Uzbeks fighting against Ukraine has exceeded 1,100
At least 1,110 Uzbek citizens have signed contracts with the Russian army and participated in the Russo-Ukrainian war since 2016, according to the Ukrainian project "Khochu Zhit" ("I Want to Live").
According to project documents, Russia's threats against labor migrants, the threat of deportation, and promises of money remain the main methods of recruiting them into the military.
Including the number of ethnic Uzbeks, this figure could reach several thousand. According to the published list, at least 109 people died in this war, the youngest of whom was not yet 21 years old.
Also, the oldest was 62 years old. Some died just 8 days after the agreement was signed. This list is not prisoners of war, they are Uzbeks who participated or are participating in the war against Ukraine on the side of Russia.
Under Uzbek law, mercenary service is a crime. However, according to the draft document, recent court decisions have given suspended sentences or restrictions on freedom to many individuals involved in the war in Ukraine, raising many unanswered questions among the public.
