The Assad regime executed nearly a hundred Hamas members
The former Assad regime in Syria has reportedly executed 94 leaders and members of the Palestinian Hamas movement without trial, the Palestinian newspaper Al-Quds Al-Arabi reported, citing sources close to Hamas.
According to reports, documents found at the headquarters of the Syrian security services after the overthrow of the Assad regime revealed that orders to arrest and punish individuals associated with Hamas were in effect until Assad left power.
In 2022, relations between Hamas and the Assad regime were normalized. At that time, Hamas, through the mediation of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, presented a list of members to be released. However, according to sources, Nasrallah did not provide any information to Hamas, knowing that the individuals on the list might have already been executed.
The Palestinian movement moved its headquarters to Qatar after the start of the Syrian civil war, supporting the revolutionaries. Local members of Hamas in Syria joined the opposition and fought against both Assad forces and ISIS militants in the defense of the Yarmouk camp.
Victory of the rebels and release of prisoners
In December 2024, Syrian rebels captured Damascus and freed dozens of Hamas members from Sednaya prison, including the head of the Syrian branch.
