Kazakhstan introduces life imprisonment for drug production and sale
Kazakhstan has stepped up its fight against drug trafficking, introducing life imprisonment for those involved in the production and sale of drugs. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed a bill providing for the procedure.
Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has signed a new law to strengthen the fight against the illegal production and trafficking of drugs, significantly increasing the penalties for this type of crime.
Those guilty of such crimes can now be sentenced to 15 to 20 years in prison with confiscation of property, or life imprisonment.
If this crime is committed for the first time without aggravating circumstances, the penalty is 5 to 8 years in prison. Previously, this term was 5 to 10 years.
The distribution of drugs to minors or in educational institutions is punishable by imprisonment for a term of 15 to 20 years, with confiscation of property.
Officials found guilty of distributing drugs face a prison sentence of 15 to 20 years, along with confiscation of property.
Criminal liability has been introduced for the cultivation of plants containing narcotic substances by a criminal group.
Separate penalties have been established for the illicit trafficking of substances and equipment used in the production of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances, or precursors.
