Citizen who rescued hostage at Almaty airport to be rewarded
Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has praised the heroism of a local citizen who risked his life to save a hostage at Almaty airport and ordered him to be awarded, the head of state's press secretary Ruslan Zheldybay reported on his Telegram channel .
The incident took place on Friday morning at the airport in Kazakhstan's second largest city. It is reported that the knife-wielding attacker, posing as a passenger, entered the pre-flight security area of the domestic terminal. When airport staff demanded to see his documents, the criminal grabbed a security guard by the hair, threatened to kill him and pointed a knife at him .
The incident was witnessed by a man who had arrived at the airport to meet his relatives. He negotiated with the attacker and offered to take the girl's place as a hostage . The attacker agreed .
Taking advantage of the opportunity , the citizen snatched the knife from the attacker's hand . Immediately, security officers at the scene arrested the perpetrator . He turned out to be a 67-year-old citizen of the country. His motive is still unknown.
The man's courage was recognized at the highest level.
"The president recognized the courage and skill of the man who neutralized the criminal and ordered him to be awarded a state award," Zheldibay wrote.
