322 people died in 4 years due to drunk drivers - will punishment be increased?
Over the past 4 years, about 600 road accidents have occurred in Uzbekistan due to drunk drivers, resulting in 322 deaths. This was announced at a meeting of the Senate Committee on Defense and Security.
The meeting discussed the proposal by the relevant agencies to amend and add to Article 266 of the Criminal Code. These amendments provide for increased penalties for dangerous drivers, including those driving while intoxicated or under the influence of drugs.
The meeting also considered the issue of forming a working group consisting of representatives of ministries and departments responsible for preparing the draft law.
According to reports, in 2024 alone, 405 accidents were committed by people with disqualified driving licenses, resulting in 94 deaths. This is causing serious public outrage. Following this, there is a growing demand on social media to further strengthen the current laws.
Analysts believe that such cases will continue unless punishments for drunk drivers are significantly increased.
