UN: More than 1.5 million Syrians have returned since the fall of the Assad regime
According to Edem Vosornu, Director of the Operations and Protection Division of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), more than 1.5 million Syrians who had been displaced within the country and in neighboring countries since the overthrow of the Bashar Assad regime have returned to their homeland.
Vosornu provided information about the situation in Syria at a regular press conference this week at the UN office in Geneva.
He said, "16.5 million people in Syria are in need of humanitarian assistance and protection. Population movements and displacement processes are still ongoing."
Despite the challenges, humanitarian operations are continuing. According to Vosornu, the UN and partner organizations are assisting an average of 2.4 million people each month through operations inside the country and across the border.
"We hope that the US decision to lift sanctions on Syria and the European Union's recent initiative to lift economic sanctions will pave the way for stability, recovery and development in the country," he said.
Vosornou clarified that "more than 1 million Syrians have returned to their places of residence within the country, while more than half a million refugees have returned from neighboring countries."
He also noted that approximately a thousand trucks carrying aid have entered Syria since the beginning of this year and thanked partners for their cooperation in this process.
