Syria's former interior minister surrenders to new government
Former Syrian Interior Minister Muhammad al-Shaar has surrendered to authorities for the first time since 2011. He was accused of violently suppressing protests during the Bashar al-Assad government and was subject to US and European Union sanctions.
The new government's security forces had been searching for him for days, conducting raids. Al-Shaar's surrender means that one of the most senior Assad government officials has been captured.
He was the victim of two assassination attempts in 2012, including a minor injury from a bombing at the Interior Ministry building.
