Syrian leader does not want to cut ties with Russia
Syria's new leader, Ahmed al-Shar, has expressed his intention to continue close strategic relations with Russia. He stressed the importance of maintaining cooperation rather than severing ties with Moscow.
The Syrian leader described Russia as the second most powerful country in the world, commenting on the country's importance in Syria.
"All of Syria's weapons come from Russia, and many power plants are operated by Russian specialists. We don't want Russia to leave Syria too quickly," he said.
Russia's military bases and joint operations in Syria played a key role in keeping the Assad regime in power. However, al-Shar'i said the new government would reconsider its relations with Russia.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that negotiations will be held on the fate of the Russian bases.
"It is necessary to discuss not only the preservation of the bases, but also their technical operation, supply, and the conditions for local cooperation," Lavrov said.
Al-Shar stressed the need to maintain stability in Syria and not lose cooperation with external alliances during the country's transition. He also emphasized the common strategic interests between Russia and Syria.
