Russia-Syria talks: compensation or Assad's extradition?
The first talks between Russia and the new Syrian government were held in Damascus. The meeting discussed the maintenance of Russia's military presence in Syria, the issue of compensation, and the extradition of Bashar Assad.
On the Russian side, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov and the presidential special representative for Syria, Alexander Lavrentyev, participated in the negotiations.
Representatives of large Russian companies also visited Damascus as part of economic cooperation.
The Syrian side was represented by the country's President Ahmed al-Sharʻa, Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani, and Health Minister Maher al-Sharʻa.
Russia wants to continue using its seaport and airbase in Syria, but no agreement has been reached.
Syria's new government has called on Russia to help with compensation and reconstruction, and has also demanded that Moscow hand over former President Bashar al-Assad, who fled the country.
After the meeting, the Russian delegation agreed to continue the negotiations. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declined to comment on the issues.
