Nearly half a million people have taken to the streets of Belgrade, the Serbian capital, to demand the resignation of President Aleksandar Vučić. The protests began in the fall of 2024 after a deadly train accident at the Novi Sad train station, in which a concrete canopy collapsed, killing 15 people, including three children.

Citizens attribute the tragedy to government corruption and shoddy infrastructure projects, particularly large-scale projects involving Chinese companies, which they believe led to the tragedy.

The protesters are demanding a fair investigation, accountability for the perpetrators, and the resignation of President Vučić. Students also actively participated in the protest, walking 80 kilometers from Belgrade to Novi Sad to commemorate the victims.

Earlier, Serbian Prime Minister Miloš Vučević announced his resignation. He was appointed prime minister in May 2024 and previously served as defense minister and mayor of Novi Sad. While Vučević's resignation is a partial response to protesters' demands, citizens continue to demand the resignation of President Vučić as well.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has said he is not concerned about the protests. At the same time, tensions have also been seen in parliament, with scuffles between deputies. These events are increasing political instability in Serbia and further increasing distrust between the government and citizens.
