Phone scammers set fire to more than 180 locations in Russia – "Mediazona"
According to the publication "Mediazona", since the beginning of the war in Russia, the number of arson attacks carried out by telephone scammers has exceeded 180. These attacks have targeted military registration and enlistment offices, banks, cars, and other public facilities.
Journalists estimate that in 2024, such attacks increased significantly: 92 attacks were recorded at the behest of fraudsters, and only one case of arson was committed for political reasons against the war. This trend suggests that certain groups of Russians are being tricked by telephone and are resorting to self-harm.
The publication notes that 132 criminal cases have been opened against telephone scammers, including charges of property damage and hooliganism. To date, 56 cases have been sentenced, and many victims have received suspended sentences.
The majority of the attacks are a new type of phone fraud and highlight the need for victims to be vigilant. In this process, fraudsters have managed to trick people into believing the threats by posing as bank or law enforcement officials.
