In recent months, reports of unidentified drones have been increasing in the United States. In particular, in December, drones were spotted over the Ramstein military base in Germany, and unmanned aircraft were observed in New Jersey and other states, which caused serious discussions. The movements and source of such aircraft remain unknown.
Congresswoman Dawn Fantasia of New Jersey said that drones are difficult to detect using traditional technology. They are up to 6 feet in diameter, move with their lights off, and fly in a coordinated manner. This increases the likelihood that they are used for dangerous missions.
US Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said the increase in drone reports could be due to federal laws, saying the widespread use of drones in recent years has led to increased detection.
Officials have not provided any evidence that the drones pose a direct threat. A Facebook spokesperson described the situation as an "overreaction." However, the US government continues to monitor the situation closely.
Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas said in an interview that he had no information that the drones were linked to other countries, but he promised that the American people would be informed.
There is still no clear information about the source of the drones or who operated them. Rep. Jeff Van Drew, a Republican from New Jersey, suggested that the drones may have come from an Iranian ship in the Atlantic Ocean. Rep. Raja Krishnamurthy, a Democrat from Illinois, also raised the possibility of Chinese involvement.
Pentagon and US government officials have said there is no evidence that the drones were controlled from abroad. The situation has been further complicated by the arrest of Chinese citizen Yin Piao Zhou for using a drone near Vandenberg Air Force Base.
Identifying the threats posed by drones and their source is becoming a priority for the US government. Politicians such as Donald Trump have said that drones should not be allowed to operate “outside of government control.” However, American law prohibits shooting down drones, which further complicates the problem.
Research into unidentified drones is still ongoing, and the US government is increasing its vigilance on the issue.
