Flemish universities suspend cooperation with Israeli institutions
Universities in the Flemish region have decided to end cooperation with Israeli institutions implicated in serious human rights violations.
The Flemish Interuniversity Council issued a statement saying that the decision was made in response to calls from more than 6,000 professors, staff and students to end academic cooperation with Israel.
The statement stressed that Flemish universities strongly condemn violations of international humanitarian law and war crimes. It also stated that the universities accept respect for human rights as a fundamental criterion in assessing international cooperation.
"We will not work with Israeli institutions that violate human rights"
The Council recalled that each Flemish university makes cooperation decisions in accordance with human rights principles. It was also emphasized that it would not participate in projects that pose a risk of human rights violations.
Following the calls, Flemish universities have reviewed existing partnerships with Israeli institutions and decided to end risky projects. It was also announced that no new partnerships will be established with Israeli institutions implicated in serious human rights violations.
