At least 25 people have been killed and more than 1,100 injured in a powerful explosion at a port in southern Iran, a government spokesman said.

The New York Times reported that the incidentwas caused by an explosion of sodium perchlorate, a substance that is a key component of rocket fuel.

According to reports, on April 11 of this year, the first batch of chemicals intended for rocket fuel, approximately 1,000 tons, was delivered from China to the Shahid Rajai port.

The Rokna news agency reported that the blast even shattered windows in buildings within a radius of several kilometers.

According to Kontekst, the fire in the port area has not yet been completely extinguished. The powerful explosion and fire have caused a sharp deterioration in air quality. As a result, local authorities have decided to temporarily close all schools.
